Miles Black
Attention all Count Basie fans and big band fans in general. Mark your calendars for Saturday afternoon, May 31, when Impressions will perform the entire Kansas City Suite in a free concert at the Vancouver Public Library Central Branch. Pianist Miles Black will join the band as guest artist, a rare treat to hear this renowned Vancouver musician in a big band setting.
The Kansas City Suite was composed by Benny Carter for the Count Basie Orchestra and originally recorded in 1960. The ten compositions are a musical tribute to the various Kansas City clubs that were active in the ’30s when Basie was a resident. Local educator and saxophonist Will Goede will be on hand to provide some colorful background on the Suite and the musicological and historical significance of that work and other accomplishments of the Basie Orchestra.
We’re really thrilled to be performing with Miles. He’s one of the most in-demand pianists in the Pacific Northwest and one of the best you’ll hear anywhere. He’s performed on over 400 albums and is an important contributor to “Band-in-a-Box” and other music education software. Miles has performed and recorded with many of the greats including Max Roach, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Lee Konitz, Slide Hampton, Paul Horn, Donald Bailey, Sheila Jordan, Mark Murphy, Ernestine Anderson, Maynard Ferguson, Lew Tabackin, Claudio Roditi, Houston Person, and Von Freeman.
